Crystals not only add beauty and sparkle to an aquarium; they provide healing benefits to the fish and overall environment as well. Clear quartz and many quartz-based agates are most suitable for freshwater aquariums.

Quartz crystals are ideal for both small and large aquarium use. Crystals touching the gravel in an aquarium maintain healthy anaerobic bacteria that live there. Terminated crystals help energy flow in all directions. This is important in an aquarium with living fish and water plants as it helps to enhance the circular filtration system and the spiraling movement of the water. Placing crystals also has beneficial effects in reducing stress levels, where fish can hover around a corner or rest in a crevice rather than constantly being on the move.
It is important to choose which crystals to use.  Most fish themselves prefer to be around most kinds of quartz-based agates. It can be a lot of fun to observe and make note of the behaviors of fish and how they react to different stones. The best stones to use are Clear quartz, Rose quartz, Blue Lace Agate, Green Moss agate, Tree agate, Moonstone and light Smokey Quartz.

Care has to be taken in only using stones that have more quartz than any other mineral, in order to avoid toxic leaching of harmful minerals into the water. For example, fluorite, malachite, hematite, calcite, pyrite and turquoise do more harm than good.
